    Abstract:

In a time of uncertainty, many educators have been thrust into virtual teaching with little in the way of support. This webinar will share lessons learned from The PHL Technology and Adult Education Initiative, an ongoing community of practice where Philly-based educators advance their use of technology through collaboration and inquiry with peers. A local program administrator in Philadelphia will provide tips and strategies for Google Classroom she gained as a participant of the initiative, which she has expanded for her learners during COVID-19. Ideas for building community and providing collaborative professional development remotely and in a time of scarce resources will also be shared. Come prepared to connect, learn, and reflect as a community! The PHL Technology and Adult Education Initiative was supported by the Office of Adult Education, a division of Philadelphia's Office of Workforce Development. Abstract:

I-BEST is a recognized and successful IET model that helps adult learners access and succeed in postsecondary level career and technical programs. However, this robust model may not be the right fit for students at a lower skill level, and it can be a difficult model to implement for programs not closely engaged with a community college in their region. Abstract:

Work ethic—sometimes called soft skills, workplace readiness, or foundational behaviors—are emerging as critical skills for the future. Students with strong non-cognitive skills graduate college at nearly double the average rate. Nearly 9 out of 10 hiring managers nationwide say work ethic is their most important factor in hiring. The challenge is that fewer than 1 in 5 students have these basic skills, and almost all education is focused on academic and cognitive skills. However, new strategies in developing work ethic are making a huge difference with diverse populations across the country. https://prezi.com/htwq_1u0sinj/work-ethic-the-critical-skills-of-the-21st-century-workforce/?utm_campaign=share&token=92988fcec9982549fd62ba241b53ee6eab05b23b21b6e3908d7c4d50182e4fde&utm_medium=copy

    Abstract:

All ESL programs want their learners to experience high-quality teaching, whether it is delivered by a full-time professional teacher, a part-time teacher who is new to the field, or a classroom volunteer. This session will share resources that have been developed to increase the teaching skills and confidence of classroom teachers and volunteers who may have limited time for training and varying levels of expertise. Throughout the session, participants will have the opportunity to explore the Minnesota Literacy Council’s classroom activity videos, mini-trainings toolkit, and ESL small-group pull-out kits. These resources will support teachers and volunteers in areas such as giving effective feedback, delivering activity instructions, and using appropriate amounts of teacher talk. The presenter will recommend ways for programs to use these free resources to support teachers and volunteers, and participants will share their own ideas through facilitated discussions.

    Abstract:

In order for English language learners to take full advantage of today’s career and educational opportunities, they need to rise to the higher expectations for academic rigor as outlined in the College and Career Readiness Standards, and achieve measurable outcomes as defined by the Workforce Investment Opportunity Act. How can we meet these rising expectations in our general English language classes? By enriching the content we teach, broadening the contexts of English to include workplace and academic communication, scaffolding rigorous tasks, and increasing the range and frequency of higher order thinking skills. Join this webinar to see how the new edition of Future has risen to today’s higher expectations. We will highlight how the new edition’s reading and writing strands scaffold challenging tasks from the start, and how the Future’s new workplace soft-skill strand engages students’ culture skills in collaborative problem-solving tasks.

    Abstract:

Did you know that there are mathematicians that spend their entire life trying to solve one math problem, often pioneering advancements in areas like cryptography that secure digital assets and transactions? These are highly educated men and women who see mathematics as creative and open, crafting algorithms that form the backbone of decentralized systems. They are not confined by rules – they MAKE their own rules! But isn’t it unfortunate that in the adult education classrooms mathematics is thought to be a subject of rules and procedures? That it isn’t something that is creative. This webinar will explore the powerful idea of mathematical freedom and change mathematics for learners so that mathematics becomes about learning instead of performing, drawing on real-world contexts where complex equations enable innovative financial tools. Participants should expect to be engaged in thinking about problems in an open and creative manner, reviewing selections from 99Bitcoins best Ethereum wallets to dissect the underlying security models, to begin to see the world deeper, but not necessarily faster, uncovering how such frameworks rely on inventive problem-solving for robust protection.
