Abstract:
Approximately one-third of the U.S. workforce works in service-sector industries such as restaurants and hotels, and the number of employees in these industries is on the rise. In this session, presenters will share results from an analysis of the most recent PIAAC data (2012/14), examining and comparing demographic profiles and characteristics of service-sector workers by their literacy skill levels. In addition, participants will learn how to best support service-sector workers in their upskilling efforts and hear examples of such support from a leading policy expert of adult education and upskilling. Lastly, participants will engage in a group discussion about how these research findings can help adult learners.

This workshop will guide instructors on how to contextualize social studies content (particularly civics & government) found on the Social Studies GED® test and connect that content with critical reading skills. It will begin with a model lesson using the essential question found in the title of the workshop: Who are “We the People?" The workshop will provide activities and texts adaptable and suitable for a variety of reading levels. It will model and encourage Freirian methods of instruction that stress student-led activities that increase critical thinking and contextualized learning. It will review and utilize adult learning principles.

Abstract:
Allowing space for productive struggle is a way to engage learners in problem solving and build perseverance (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2014). In this session we will explore the teacher’s role in developing student agency. Participants will see how stepping back, creating contextual lessons with multiple entry points, and strategic questioning can build student agency and move learners to productive struggle. With increased agency, learners are able to develop robust problem solving sets. They build communication skills to construct viable arguments and, in articulating their developing understanding, learners have an opportunity to use both domain specific vocabulary and the academic vocabulary needed to skillfully negotiate their way through a process.

Do you get frustrated with students using their cell phones in class? Turn that problem into a possibility! Students come alive as they work in teams with student team leaders using their cell phones as game controllers. I’ve never had more fun in class than when doing these Kahoot! quizzes, and the students love them! It’s a great way to get students to interact with each other and to review. As a teacher, you can see how well the students are learning. These quizzes are designed to correlate with the “I’m Not Afraid . . . Anymore!” curriculum for GED®-HSE Math and Writing, and ESL Writing, but they can be used with, or modified for, other curriculum. Come Kahoot! with us in this presentation and join the fun.

During this interactive workshop, participants will learn the nuts and bolts of Integrated Education and Training (IET) and how to create basic skills curriculum to support an IET. Participants will work through a planning process to develop an IET and the basic skills component. Ideas for workforce preparation activities, strategies for working with partners, and particulars about implementing IETs under WIOA will be offered as well. Participants will receive a resource guide containing IET planning and development tools and create an IET implementation and communication plan. There will be many opportunities to network and learn from colleagues.

"Fake news" and misinformation has been with us since the tale of the Trojans falling for a wooden horse. But it has been making big headlines recently. Even major news organizations are devoting teams to fact-checking published reports. So how is an adult learner to figure out what's legit? News for You Editor Jennifer Thompson will present a brief overview of the "fake news" crisis and offer ideas and activities to help learners sharpen their online and news literacy skills. We'll also talk about how News for You works to ensure accuracy and fairness.

Abstract:
Supporting ABE students’ academic success means advocating for institutional change beyond the borders of ABE programs. Our goal is to generate dialogue about the culture of ABE at our institutions to identify opportunities for student-centered initiatives that open college pathways for ABE students. Combined co-taught ABE and Development Education courses at TCC have broadened perspectives on student capacity, exposed assumptions and stereotypes, and created opportunities for acceleration. Through collaborative inquiry, learning from student voice, and focused discussion, participants will critically examine their programs to discover potential areas of growth. Strategies for merging curriculum, developing stakeholder buy-in, and shifting cultural paradigms will be shared, along with lessons learned.
