When students choose an industry of interest to them and are provided with experiential learning activities, the learning is more meaningful, specific and applicable and their ability to articulate learning becomes more natural. Explore the advantages of project-based learning, scenario-driven e-modules, and authentic assessment via the constructs of portfolio development as we contextualize learning around career readiness skills. Abstract:

In this current climate of health, economic and social unrest, new approaches for creating a greater abundance of effective and affordable career pathways for low-income learners are more important than ever. Two years ago, ten community-based teams embarked on a journey to do just that! They participated in the Minds that Move Us (MTMU) Adult Career Pathways Design Challenge, which focused on the creation of bold, sustainable career pathways approaches for low-income adults (aged 26+) for a chance to win $100,000 in prize money. Fast forward to present day, the ten teams have rich and timely lessons that are shared in The MTMU Toolkit: A Collection of Place-Based Solutions for Future Adult Career Pathways Models. During this engaging panel discussion, you’ll hear from teams that participated in the challenge and the project’s key partners—IEL, COABE, and NASDAE—as they discuss the toolkit’s key principles for being adaptable, removing barriers and maximizing potential to innovate within adult career pathways. Abstract:

Did you know that there are mathematicians that spend their entire life trying to solve one math problem? These are highly educated men and women who see mathematics as creative and open. They are not confined by rules – they MAKE their own rules! But isn’t it unfortunate that in the adult education classrooms mathematics is thought to be a subject of rules and procedures? That it isn’t something that is creative. This webinar will explore the powerful idea of mathematical freedom and change mathematics for learners so that mathematics becomes about learning instead of performing. Participants should expect to be engaged in thinking about problems in an open and creative manner, to begin to see the world deeper, but not necessarily faster.

    Abstract:

Under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, improving adult learners’ ability to attain a job with family-sustaining wages is a high priority. One vehicle to achieve this is Integrated Education and Training (IET) programs set within career pathways. While there are several professional development (PD) resources that introduce IET concepts and program models, many adult educators struggle as they put policy into practice and during the implementation phase. In particular, adult education and literacy instructors and technical skills instructors are challenged to create a single set of learning objectives. Program administrators likewise need guidance in supporting IET teachers effectively. This presentation will highlight recent, innovative approaches of the American Institutes for Research to support IET implementation among AEFLA providers across California. The co-presenters will describe PD strategies used in their implementation clinic and lessons learned. Participants will experience an interactive activity from the clinic and receive additional PD resources.
