The COABE Archive of Special Collections was created to preserve and share valuable adult foundational education (AFE) resources that were becoming difficult to find — including research, reports, curricula, assessment tools, advocacy strategies, and guidebooks.

Originally conceived by a group of veteran AFE researchers and practitioners, the Archive is now supported by COABE as a growing demonstration model for the field. Its purpose is simple: to ensure high-quality resources remain accessible and usable for today’s educators, leaders, partners, and advocates.

Who Is It For?

The Archive is designed for:

  • Adult education instructors and administrators
  • Policy makers and funders
  • Researchers and graduate students
  • Adult learner leaders
  • Community partners and advocates

These collections help strengthen professional practice — especially important in a field where professional development opportunities are often limited.

What’s Included?

The Archive currently features four Special Collections:

  1. Business Partnerships

Resources highlighting how businesses have supported adult education through funding, planning, awareness-building, and workplace education initiatives.

  2. Policy for Adult Foundational Education

Research and policy papers addressing both general AFE policy and key issues for decision-makers.

  3. Workplace Learning

Research, models, and curricula demonstrating how adult education supports incumbent workers and industry needs.

  4. Learners, Educators, and Communities as Problem Solvers

Materials focused on participatory, community-oriented approaches that equip learners to address real-world challenges and opportunities related to work, health, family, and civic life.

These collections help strengthen professional practice — especially important in a field where professional development opportunities are often limited.
