Learning Circles are a low-cost blended learning model for delivering short-term (6-12 week) instruction using trained volunteer facilitators and online courses or learning resources. Abstract:

Do you get frustrated with students using their cell phones in class? Turn that problem into a possibility! Students come alive as they work in teams with student team leaders using their cell phones as game controllers. I’ve never had more fun in class than when doing these Kahoot! quizzes, and the students love them! It’s a great way to get students to interact with each other and to review. As a teacher, you can see how well the students are learning. These quizzes are designed to correlate with the “I’m Not Afraid . . . Anymore!” curriculum for GED®-HSE Math and Writing, and ESL Writing, but they can be used with, or modified for, other curriculum. Come Kahoot! with us in this presentation and join the fun.

    Abstract:

Adult education is a specialized field, unfamiliar to most educators.  Between learning relevant content and understanding the principles of andragogy, ABE instructors can quickly become overwhelmed - leading to poor instruction and/or high turnover.  Join us as we outline a comprehensive process, based upon research and our own experiences and observation, for successfully onboarding instructors into an adult basic education classroom using instructional support, online resources, and instructor mentoring.

The College of Southern Idaho College and Career Readiness Adult Basic Education program uses the checklist with new employees so that there is a common set of protocols followed by all participants. There are two tabs in the attached Excel workbook. One checklist is for instructors; one is for Intake Office Specialists. The checklist can be modified to address the needs of various employees. Abstract:

What does a lesson built for student learning look like when learners come to programs with limited or interrupted formal education?  Students who lack home language literacy and exposure to a formal classroom setting need explicit training about "classroom culture."  Instructors need to use systematic scaffolding and other research-based techniques to effectively equip learners with transferrable skills for tomorrow's workforce and civic engagement.
