Abstract: Adult numeracy teachers frequently express concern and frustration that learners at all levels struggle with word problems. These materials, from a COABE 2018 presentation, represent some existing research on why word problems can be difficult, how teachers can help learners overcome difficulties and make sense of the problems, and ways that teachers can structure instruction to reduce learners’ fears and unproductive “solution” responses.
