Abstract:
Financial literacy is a crucial component of adult education and workforce programming to help adult learners manage their resources effectively and become self-sufficient. However, integrating financial literacy into programs without individualized supports may not improve academic and workforce outcomes. This article provides an overview of financial coaching and individual supports, and the research that underscores their importance. Drawing on interviews with four directors of adult education and workforce organizations in different states, this article explores how the organizations implement financial coaching and outlines their strategies to increase learners’ financial knowledge and stability. Findings highlight the central role of financial coaching and individualized support to address learners’ complex financial challenges, the importance of culturally responsive and relationship-based coaching, and the value of local partnerships in expanding available resources. The article concludes with implications for offering and strengthening financial coaching and support services as well as ideas to advocate for these services.
