    Abstract:

The pandemic is tough but Texas adult education is tougher! Texas Adult Education and Literacy bucked the trend of program closures and kept every area of the Lone Star state open to not only serve learners but enroll new students, especially those who have become unemployed. State director Anson Green and two local providers will describe what Texas did to rapidly expand distance and remote learning, mobile messaging apps, remote enrollment, and remote testing to keep the (virtual) doors open. Anson will describe the state-level response plan including rapid enhancements to policy, guidelines, communications, and funding. Local providers will describe how they flipped the switch from brick and mortar to remote services and did not let the pandemic take its toll on the progress of adult learners.   Recording link: https://youtu.be/PB7lPnc9BXw Original Air Date: April 28, 2020

    Abstract:

Over the past few weeks, our society has undergone major changes to try to slow the spread of COVID-19. Accurate, accessible health information is essential to help people stay safe and healthy, understand federal safety guidelines, and prevent unnecessary fear. The American Institutes for Research (AIR) has created a plain-language FAQ that addresses a variety of topics related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The document was developed as a resource for schools, day cares, healthcare organizations, and other public centers to distribute. It is designed to make this information accessible and comprehensible to everyone, regardless of education level or background. Presenters include Dr. Erica Shelton, an AIR researcher and emergency medicine physician in Baltimore, MD and Dr. Trenita Childers, an AIR health researcher specializing in equity and community engagement. The webinar begins by reviewing the FAQs to provide an overview of accurate, medically sound information. Then, presenters will share strategies and resources for providing information to adult learners with low literacy or limited English proficiency.   Recording link: https://youtu.be/PcKfQG5Rivs Original Air Date: April 16, 2020
