Abstract:
During this session participants will join Jessica and Sandra to explore the 8 Math Practices of the CCRS, what they mean for teaching math with greater depth, and simple activities to get your students thinking deeper about mathematics. Participants with all levels of math knowledge are invited to attend as no level of expertise is required by the participants. Participants will travel to 8 stations to learn a math practice and try out an activity that shows the practice in action. Each station will demonstrate an activity that can easily be translated into skills needed for any of the High School Equivalency Exams and College and Career Readiness. All activities will be differentiated as well so attendees of all levels will be able to participate. Activities to be covered include differentiated war, algebra tiles, Cuisenaire rods, pattern blocks, exploring triangles, fractions strips, problem solving, and attribute cards. For too long, algebra has been viewed in adult education as the second most daunting math (second only to fractions), and now it is time to make algebra as approachable as adding. Participants in this session will discover some new approaches to teaching algebra as patterns, rules, equations, and lines on a graph while utilizing research-based tools, techniques, and resources learned from the Adult Numeracy Instruction -“ Professional Development (ANI-PD). Hands-on practice and ready-to-use resources will be provided. Join math, science, and ESL adult educators to learn how to identify, use, modify, combine, and create open educational resources (OER) in an online environment. Bring your laptop/device and at least one science or math OER to modify (other OER will be provided too). We will evaluate these resources, revise and remix them, and consider licensing options for these newly created OER. This session is open to practitioners in all subject areas and promises to get you excited about using, creating, and sharing OER! How can we support ELLs as they learn numeracy? Does that happen in "math" class or in "English" class? ABE math teachers (who often teach math conceptually) and ELL teachers (who often teach math contextually, within life-skills topics) have much to learn from each other. Using the CCRS's multiple references to the number line, this numeracy session uses the number line as the focus of "Coherence" from the beginning, definition of number sets through Algebraic thinking. We investigate the age-old question, "Why is a negative times a negative a positive?" We explore basic operations (add, subtract, multiply and divide) and continue on to solve simple algebraic equations.
