    Abstract:

These three short, free, authentic professional development videos for teachers or tutors draw on five principles of effective vocabulary instruction from the research of Curtis and McKeown, 1987. See  http://www.ncsall.net/?id=466,  in an article in Focus on Basics, Connecting Research and Practice, Volume 2, Issue A, The nature of vocabulary acquisition. Hillsdale, NJ: Erlbaum.) The five principles are: 1) Students get numerous opportunities to learn a word's meaning; 2) Words are presented in a variety of contexts; 3) Students are asked to process words in active, generative ways; 4) Distinctions as well as similarities among words' meanings are stressed; and 5) improvement is emphasized in students' ability to use words in speaking and writing, as well as to recognize their meanings. The adult reading teacher introduces the theory, and the lessons, and then we see the lessons in progress. The web address for these videos is http://www.mlo ts.org/?page_id=59

    Abstract:

Do you know when your students are prepared for their HSE Test? Since the new tests have come on board educators have been trying to get a "feel" for when students are ready. By taking a close look at data and using tools and analysis skills to sort it all out, teachers can find reliable ways to develop instructional pathways for students that lead to success. Teachers will not only know when students are prepared, but they will know how to get students to that point in specific ways as they focus on data collection and analysis. Data analysis skills and techniques specific to teaching will be covered.     Video

    Abstract:

The new HSE tests are now over a year into implementation and, as may not be a surprise to many people, the mathematics portion continues to provide the biggest challenge to many of our adult learners. In order to clear the raised bar of mathematics mastery in the world of new tests, higher standards, and a 21st-century economy that increasingly requires post-secondary education and training (and...MORE math!) we must improve the foundations upon which our students' mathematics is based. This session focuses on the most missed math concepts of the new HSE tests as well as important data from PIAAC, and works backward to the core foundations (and instructional best practices for building these foundations) needed for increased student success in mathematics on test day and beyond. #COABE2015 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klxruT1V5Eo&t=15s

    Abstract:

A short, free, authentic classroom professional development video on teaching essay writing. Students learn how to write an essay, how to: brainstorm ideas for the topic they are presented with, organize the ideas, write a topic sentence, and write an introductory and concluding paragraph. They also learn what to expect in the testing situation, for example, that the topic is given, that they have to brainstorm ideas without getting blocked, and that they will not have time to draft and re-copy a final essay. Although the GED 2014 series exam does not include a writing test as such, some of the strategies may be useful for the writing sections of the exam. Also, this approach may be useful for other high school equivalency exams such as the TASC and the HiSET. In this lesson students are given this topic: What qualities do you think make up a good employer? Write an essay that identifies the qualities you think a good employer has, giving specific examples to back up your ideas.-
