Rarely in AE are emotions or traumas discussed. Yet, emotions and trauma have a major impact on how students learn. Join this engaging, 2-part webinar to see why emotions are the key to learning, how emotions and trauma keep students from learning, why students have major roles in their knowledge and skills, and what learning challenges AE students have that, if not identified and addressed, will perpetuate negative feelings about themselves and school. Four simple techniques will be offered in Part 2 that educators can use with AE students. These simple strategies can both change student success and attune teachers to what outside issues might be keeping students from learning!

Implementing Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education for Adults, this webinar will provide an update on implementation challenges and successes for the Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) program under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). The webinar will include some basic information about the Section 243 IELCE grant program which changed under WIOA and will update participants on lessons learned to date through the Building Opportunities project.

How do urban adult education providers design and implement career pathways (CP)? This presentation highlights findings from in-depth, qualitative case studies of six CP programs offered by community colleges, CBOs, and a school district in Chicago, Houston, and Miami. Key features of CP programs are described and compared, including their goals, instructional components, instructor expertise, staffing, support services, and access for lower-level students, among others. Salient factors that contribute to student success are also discussed, including wraparound supports, partnerships, bridge classes, and more.

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is dramatically different than previous legislation for adult education. Presenters will address these changes and how they will affect professional development. Participants will share in small groups what they are already doing to address the changes and what they will institute in the future. This will be not only a “what needs to be done” session, but also a “how to do it” session. Participants will be given a new professional development framework and a tool box on how to get started.

Abstract:
The provided materials were used for a workshop at the 2018 COABE Conference. The session was designed to familiarize participants with the scientific method by exploring how it plays out in experiments that can be conducted in any classroom, regardless of science lab materials. For example, data from the participants’ ruler drop experiment were used to analyze the reaction time of fighter pilots. We also examined how to identify the control, independent variable, and dependent variables, as well as draw a conclusion, in various scenarios from The Simpsons cartoon. We looked at content problems similar to what might be on the HSE test, and explored strategies and resources for teaching this content to students. Resources include exploring www.CK12.org and the National Institutes of Health Curriculum Supplement Series (https://science.education.nih.gov/customers/WebPages/CSHome.html). Both of these free resources are easily adaptable to a classroom, as well as online, and encourage students to interact and discover the scientific process along the way.
