    Abstract:

    The provided materials were used for a workshop at the 2018 COABE Conference. This session provided participants with hands-on activities to explore the most common solid figures used on the HSE in an effort to discover how they might develop their own formulas for these shapes. By investigating the relationships and properties of these shapes, participants improved understanding of the meaning behind the formulas provided on the HSE tests. They also evaluated a workplace scenario in marketing to see how the SA and V of solid figures can influence how products are designed.

    Abstract:

    Pennsylvania is faced with the same challenges as other states across the country; many employers cannot find skilled workers to hire, and numerous job seekers have barriers to getting back into the labor force. This webinar will explore some data about the skills gap that Pennsylvania faces, especially with the challenges of helping to educate and upskill those with barriers to employment (such as low literacy levels or inconsistent work history). It will also outline a couple of solutions that adult educators and workforce development boards can invest in (such as integrated education and training) that will help bridge this skill gap and help our communities grow and will provide best practices that can be used across the nation.

    Abstract:

    How do we bridge the gap between students’ current understanding of arithmetic to the higher level mathematics content that they need to learn? Brain science reveals that  students at all levels, ELL, ABE, & HSE alike, can cross this bridge by tapping into the visual processing centers of the brain. In this presentation, teachers will explore how a visual model can be used to help students to gain understanding of  the meaning and uses of variables, recognition of patterns and functions, and make connections to the language of algebra. Teachers will be able to connect their own learning with teaching in a multi-level classroom. The presentation includes links to additional materials including classroom-ready printable resources

    Abstract:

    Effective instruction in reading, writing, and math is critical.  Clearly teaching students how to learn, to be life-long learners, and to be able to generalize information in daily-life and the workplace is important.  However, the ultimate goal in Adult Basic Education (ABE) is for students to obtain employment or advance in their current employment setting.  Therefore, adult education should support all students, including those with special learning needs, as they move towards post-secondary education and training in support of career pathways and career development.  With that said, one of the most important skills ABE students need to learn is “how” to learn.  Participants in this session will begin to understand how to support students in becoming strategic learners.  They will be introduced to techniques and strategies that: 1) more effectively teach reading, writing, and math skills, 2) teach students how to learn best for themselves, how to be life-long learners, and how to be able to generalize information to daily-life and the workplace settings and 3) teach using all modalities effectively so students can learn and remember information more easily.  Participants will also begin to understand how to provide a full range of reading, writing, and or math instruction through activities in multi-level classes that include all learning styles.  Examples of potential lessons and lesson activities will be provided.

    Abstract:

    Along with the cognitive, the affective domain (emotions, feelings, attitudes, and mindsets) is acknowledged in adult learning theory, yet it is an often neglected predictor of student success. This session addresses the role of the affective domain in pre-college education (especially in ABE and ESL/ELL) and introduces a practical framework of self-regulation and empowerment that educators can use to assist pre-college students develop personal attributes necessary for college readiness. Participants will learn research-based quick techniques for emotional resilience and persistence and will also be introduced to award-winning technology that can be used in transition/student support centers.

    Adult numeracy teachers frequently express concern and frustration that learners at all levels struggle with word problems. These materials, from a COABE 2018 presentation, represent some existing research on why word problems can be difficult, how teachers can help learners overcome difficulties and make sense of the problems, and ways that teachers can structure instruction to reduce learners’ fears and unproductive “solution” responses.
