Abstract: How do we bridge the gap between students’ current understanding of arithmetic to the higher level mathematics content that they need to learn? Brain science reveals that students at all levels, ELL, ABE, & HSE alike, can cross this bridge by tapping into the visual processing centers of the brain. In this presentation, teachers will explore how a visual model can be used to help students to gain understanding of the meaning and uses of variables, recognition of patterns and functions, and make connections to the language of algebra.
