    Abstract:

    You can now serve large numbers of refugees and immigrants in your community with a breakthrough smartphone-based learning model. Developed through a successful global deployment with Afghan refugees, the Learning Upgrade Refugee Program uses WhatsApp to onboard large numbers of refugees and create learning community groups. Staff or volunteer coaches enroll learners into courses covering English ESL, math, test prep, and job skills. Learners use smartphones at home to complete engaging lessons for rapid growth to reach their goals of proficiency, GED, higher ed, and better jobs. Providers using this new model have documented a 4x rate of learning with 1 year of growth in 3 months.     Impactful, sustainable advocacy is built on strong relationships, unified messaging, and compelling stories. Join IACEA, the voice of Illinois Adult Education’s Legislative Awareness Day Committee, to learn about their experience with advocacy that culminated in two high energy Virtual Rallies (one last fall and one this spring) that consistently drew well over 100 student and staff participants from across the state. In this session, presenters will share the steps taken that resulted in these successful virtual rallies including the development of the planning committee, the promotion of the event, the integration of legislator conversations, the creation of student videos, and the inclusion of state-level leadership as presenters. During the briefing, you will hear from panelists that represent the voices of adult students, educators and administrators from around the country and in your home States and districts. The briefing will touch on how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the adult education field and emphasize the critical need for additional funding to be able to serve our students in a high-quality and safe manner.
