Abstract:
Adult Educators across the country did some amazing work trying to meet the needs of their learners in response to COVID-19. For most of us, that was Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT). We’ve had time to reflect, and we understand that ERT is something different than distance learning. Going forward, we need to be more prepared, more intentional, and more comfortable. We need a reboot! This webinar highlights some national initiatives, resources, and tools that adult educators can use to enhance their digital literacy programming and services anytime, but especially in times such as these. Abstract:
As of April 2020, estimates of the literacy and numeracy skills of U.S. adults using data from the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) are available for all states and counties. This webinar will demonstrate a new, and interactive user-friendly tool (called the U.S. PIAAC Skills Map) that shows these estimates. The Skills Map allows users to compare the estimates of any county to those of its state or compare the estimates of any state to the national estimates. It also allows users to compare the estimates for any two counties or for any two states. Examples on how you can effectively use this tool for funding and policy decisions on targeting the population most in-need will be provided. In a time of uncertainty, many educators have been thrust into virtual teaching with little in the way of support. This webinar will share lessons learned from The PHL Technology and Adult Education Initiative, an ongoing community of practice where Philly-based educators advance their use of technology through collaboration and inquiry with peers. A local program administrator in Philadelphia will provide tips and strategies for Google Classroom she gained as a participant of the initiative, which she has expanded for her learners during COVID-19. Ideas for building community and providing collaborative professional development remotely and in a time of scarce resources will also be shared. Come prepared to connect, learn, and reflect as a community! The PHL Technology and Adult Education Initiative was supported by the Office of Adult Education, a division of Philadelphia's Office of Workforce Development. Google Forms and Sheets can be used in a variety of ways to enhance learning and teaching in adult education. With Forms, we can develop personalized lessons, create automated quizzes, and solicit feedback from students and staff so they can more actively participate in program design. With Sheets, we can organize data dashboards to target student support and visualize instructional needs. In this session, we will take a high-level tour of some core features to hopefully inspire ideas on how we can use these apps to better support students and staff, while also exploring online learning opportunities so participants can extend the learning after the session.
