This PDF is a collection of handouts used in the workshop session conducted by Steve Hinds at the 2018 COABE National Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Keep in mind if you download and print this resource that many printers will automatically "shrink to fit" a PDF, reducing the size of the images . This ruins the segments and figures that are meant to be drawn using actual rulers. Make sure to turn off this setting if you print the resource.

An overview of the national Educate & Elevate campaign. Ways you can engage your community, staff, and students in advocacy efforts that impact important legislative discussions and promotes program services. Basic advocacy information and practical ways that instructors can incorporate advocacy in their classrooms and become better advocates for their students. Examples of how adult education teachers provide advocacy through a series of classroom taught lessons, class outings, service projects, and volunteer work. Links to the Educate & Elevate Campaign Toolkit, resources, lesson plans, and examples of advocacy activities and events that can be replicated in the ABE and ESOL classrooms.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, a large system with 35 adult prisons, is in the second year of expanding horizons by implementing a large reform effort to base both academic and career technical instruction on evidence-based practices. An important piece of the project is the implementation of a professional learning community at each institution. Professional learning communities have been adopted widely in K12 and more and more in adult education. The corrections environment offers some specific but not insurmountable challenges. Attend this session to hear about the challenges, the successes, and the lessons learned so far.

This session showcases the resources CASAS offers - many at no cost - which help agencies implement quality ABE/ESL programs with standardized accountability measures. The CASAS framework assists programs to assess, instruct and track youth and adult student's progress from beginning literacy through transition to post-secondary and the workforce.

Abstract:
Learning Circles are a low-cost blended learning model for delivering short-term (6-12 week) instruction using trained volunteer facilitators and online courses or learning resources. In this presentation we talked about learning circles offered primarily through libraries, and a new pilot of English language circles offered for immigrants on waiting lists for English classes at five adult basic skills programs in New England.

Abstract:
The NTI AEC started the academic year with a managed enrollment program for students enrolled in ESL and GED classes on campus. The transition provided a platform for our team to have professional conversations when it came to developing a student-centered approach to classroom structure. As the GED faculty team, we will share noteworthy reflections and tools related to math and language instruction and to the facilitation of productive staff dialogue.
