How do urban adult education providers design and implement career pathways (CP)? This presentation highlights findings from in-depth, qualitative case studies of six CP programs offered by community colleges, CBOs, and a school district in Chicago, Houston, and Miami. Key features of CP programs are described and compared, including their goals, instructional components, instructor expertise, staffing, support services, and access for lower-level students, among others. Salient factors that contribute to student success are also discussed, including wraparound supports, partnerships, bridge classes, and more.

    Abstract:

The provided materials were used for a workshop at the 2018 COABE Conference. This session provided participants with hands-on activities to explore the most common solid figures used on the HSE in an effort to discover how they might develop their own formulas for these shapes. By investigating the relationships and properties of these shapes, participants improved understanding of the meaning behind the formulas provided on the HSE tests. They also evaluated a workplace scenario in marketing to see how the SA and V of solid figures can influence how products are designed.

    Abstract:

How do we bridge the gap between students’ current understanding of arithmetic to the higher level mathematics content that they need to learn? Brain science reveals that  students at all levels, ELL, ABE, & HSE alike, can cross this bridge by tapping into the visual processing centers of the brain. In this presentation, teachers will explore how a visual model can be used to help students to gain understanding of  the meaning and uses of variables, recognition of patterns and functions, and make connections to the language of algebra. Teachers will be able to connect their own learning with teaching in a multi-level classroom. The presentation includes links to additional materials including classroom-ready printable resources

    Abstract:

ROUND TABLE HANDOUT: Supporting ABE students’ academic success means advocating for institutional change beyond the borders of ABE programs. Our goal is to generate dialogue about the culture of ABE at our institutions to identify opportunities for student-centered initiatives that open college pathways for ABE students. Combined co-taught ABE and Dev. Ed. courses at TCC have broadened perspectives on student capacity, exposed assumptions and stereotypes, and created opportunities for acceleration.

    Abstract:

A Different Approach to Math Manipulatives is a workshop designed to support ABE and GED teachers by providing them with strategies and instructional resources in their implementation the Mathematics College and Career Readiness Standards. Participants will find the strategies presented in this workshop easily adaptable and suitable to students of varying learning styles and ability. Resources will help in developing lessons that apply the standards of mathematical practices in CCRS, focusing on the most difficult to teach concepts such as rational numbers, algebraic equations, proportions, statistics and functions. Workshop participants will receive a complete packet of resources which includes a workshop binder and a manipulatives starter kit that will enable participants to start applying the strategies immediately upon their return to their classroom/school.
