    Abstract:

Building pathways to work and academic success requires a solid foundation, wide paths of basic language skills, and narrower paths branching toward learners’ divergent goals. Making instruction relevant for all learners while launching them in many different work and school directions is challenging. How can we help English language learners develop career and academic readiness skills while they explore diverse work interests, employment sectors, and pathways for achieving their goals? And how can we develop general soft skills for employability through the specific functional contexts of the sixteen career pathways and help students develop digital technology skills during their education journey? The presenter will introduce a new course with paving stones for building this path.

    Abstract:

According to a 2016 report from the Learning Policy Institute, the nation is facing a teacher shortage due to a variety of factors, including compensation and lack of resources. Furthermore, the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) reports that 32% of children (ages 0-8) in schools are dual language learners (DLLs). Because of these factors, school districts are working to find creative solutions to prevent teacher attrition and serve the needs of all students, especially dual language learners. The presenter will provide an overview of partnerships with Denver Public Schools and Aurora Public Schools to provide creative solutions to these problems, while providing career pathways for immigrants and refugees in the communities. Attendees will leave with a model of how to implement similar programming and a curricular framework, as well as sample tools for instruction for contextualized ESL classes.

    Abstract:

The National Education Technology Plan and the College and Career Readiness Standards present the field with a new way to think about requirements for student success and meeting the ever-changing demands of the workforce and education systems.   In this interactive session, participants will work together to combine expertise with cutting edge technology that supports them to meet the need for new types of learning materials and instructional approaches.   This can be achieved through open educational resources (OER). OER are free, adaptable, and sharable materials that can be created to develop student centered materials for the classroom, distance learning, and flipped classrooms. OER are significant for adult English language educators because they are free and sharable, able to be remixed and revised to meet learner needs, and customizable. Participants will do hands-on activities to: determine if a resource is open, integrate OER into instruction, and create and share OER. By creating OER teachers can increase student engagement while preparing them to be life-long learners and increase their 21st century skills. Through a project funded by the office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE), two groups of Adult ESL Teachers engaged in all of these activities.   Their successes and challenges will be used to demonstrate real world application.   Participants are encouraged to bring laptops to fully engage in the learning experience.   ATTACHMENTS: FINAL_Teachers are Experts_COABE2016
