    Abstract:

Adult learners face a number of barriers as they return to and attempt to remain in school. In Washington, DC, adult and alternative learners identified the high cost of transportation as one of those barriers and decided to do something about it. Over the course of three years, Academy of Hope Adult Public Charter School and the DC Alliance of Youth Advocates led a coalition of learners, volunteers and partners from across the city to build an evidence-based, inclusive, and learner-centered advocacy campaign that resulted in a $1.98 million per year investment in transportation subsidies for adult learners and alternative youth enrolled in school. Join us for a conversation about best practices for engaging adult and alternative learners in direct advocacy.

    Abstract:

The Iowa Department of Education presented at the 2019 COABE Conference on their collaboration with Iowa’s 15 community colleges to build, connect, and empower employer-led, community-based sector partnerships to combat a shortage of skilled labor through a wide variety of talent attraction, retention, and development initiatives. The discussion centered on newly developed statewide materials, strategies, and initiatives which continue to support the development and growth of collaborative sector partnerships in Iowa, including a series of educational toolkits, community of practice initiatives, and statewide career pathway development strategies for critical industries like health science, advanced manufacturing, IT, and energy. Many of these resources, strategies, and general ideas can be easily and quickly replicated in other communities across the US. Abstract:

The provided materials were used for a workshop at the 2018 COABE Conference. The session was designed to familiarize participants with the scientific method by exploring how it plays out in experiments that can be conducted in any classroom, regardless of science lab materials.  For example, data from the participants’ ruler drop experiment were used to analyze the reaction time of fighter pilots.  We also examined how to identify the control, independent variable, and dependent variables, as well as draw a conclusion, in various scenarios from The Simpsons cartoon.  We looked at content problems similar to what might be on the HSE test, and explored strategies and resources for teaching this content to students.  Resources include exploring www.CK12.org and the National Institutes of Health Curriculum Supplement Series (https://science.education.nih.gov/customers/WebPages/CSHome.html).  Both of these free resources are easily adaptable to a classroom, as well as online, and encourage students to interact and discover the scientific process along the way.

    Abstract:

The provided materials were used for a workshop at the 2018 COABE Conference. This session provided participants with hands-on activities to explore the most common solid figures used on the HSE in an effort to discover how they might develop their own formulas for these shapes. By investigating the relationships and properties of these shapes, participants improved understanding of the meaning behind the formulas provided on the HSE tests. They also evaluated a workplace scenario in marketing to see how the SA and V of solid figures can influence how products are designed.
