    Abstract:

"Hard skills" are important to getting a job. "Soft skills" are important for keeping a job. We can help our students qualify for and retain jobs with family sustaining incomes if we help them improve their soft, work readiness skills. The primary focus of this session is to explore a wealth of resources, strategies, and activities for infusing soft skills into your ABE, ESL, GED®, and AHS classrooms. Many of these resources have been developed by your colleagues in other states.

    Abstract:

Students are open to making sense in a reading/writing classroom. Most people expect that reading/writing classrooms involve student interpretation and explanation of texts. In math classrooms, though, students often just want us to show us how to do it. They want teachers to do the interpreting and explaining, and we need to give that power back to them. With these materials, we explore how to translate a literacy frame for sense-making into our math classes. We’ll consider: How can we harness students’ background knowledge and observations to build a collective understanding before our first calculation? How do we promote close reading of a mathematical text? How do we engage students who move quickly, while supporting students who need more time? Our workshop is for anyone who believes math should make sense both to ourselves and to our students. All workshop materials can be found at bit.ly/COABE2018CUNY

    Abstract:

Since 2014, the CUNY Adult Literacy/HSE Program has collaborated with the NYS Department of Education to create the NYSED Teacher Leader Initiative. This project has developed a community of teacher leaders across the state, dedicated to improving teaching practice in our field. These teacher leaders bring our training to educators in their regions, and develop resources and projects of their own. This workshop provides an overview and answers questions about the initiative. We'll use the voices of the NYSED Teacher Leaders themselves to reflect on the lessons we've learned about effective, ongoing, and engaging teacher development. This workshop is for teachers, administrators, state education directors - anyone interested in the resources developed and the lessons learned through this initiative. All materials from this workshop are available at bit.ly/COABE2018CUNY

    Abstract:

This PDF is a collection of handouts used in the workshop session conducted by Steve Hinds at the 2018 COABE National Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Keep in mind if you download and print this resource that many printers will automatically "shrink to fit" a PDF, reducing the size of the images . This ruins the segments and figures that are meant to be drawn using actual rulers. Make sure to turn off this setting if you print the resource.

    Abstract:

Searching for relevant resources online to prepare students for the post-test in math and the HiSET® tests, in general, can be frustrating. In response to the lack of resources, we have created a series of Khan-like videos that walk students through how to do HiSET® practice tests one problem at a time. We also created online quizzes that simulate a post-test with real-time results. Finally, we have consolidated all of our resources, including all of our syllabi, lesson plans, and curriculum in a publicly available Google Drive. All of these resources are centrally located at http://adulted-mcc.blogspot.com. Attendees will get access to all of these resources and learn the basics on how to create their own materials.
