    Illinois has a rich history of providing services to Adult Education learners. We have moved forward with the implementation of WIOA and the management of the specialized training available to instructors via the Instructional Pathways. In this session, the Illinois Community College Board and the Illinois Service Center Network staff will provide insights into the development of these Instructional Pathways, the components of the training, the data tracking system, and how these pathways are driving professional development in Illinois.

    Abstract:

    Adult education is a specialized field, unfamiliar to most educators.  Between learning relevant content and understanding the principles of andragogy, ABE instructors can quickly become overwhelmed - leading to poor instruction and/or high turnover.  Join us as we outline a comprehensive process, based upon research and our own experiences and observation, for successfully onboarding instructors into an adult basic education classroom using instructional support, online resources, and instructor mentoring.

There are two tabs in the attached Excel workbook. One checklist is for instructors; one is for Intake Office Specialists. The checklist can be modified to address the needs of various employees.     Abstract:

    In this session, the presenters will share ways you can engage your community, staff, and students in promoting adult education and impacting important legislative discussions. In addition to providing an overview of the national Educate & Elevate campaign, presenters will provide some basic advocacy information and share practical ways that instructors can incorporate advocacy in their classrooms and become better advocates for their students. They will share how adult education teachers can engage students in advocacy through a series of classroom taught lessons, class outings, service projects, and volunteer work.  Presenters will provide participants with resources and examples of advocacy activities and events that can be replicated in the ABE and ESOL classrooms.
