Abstract:
The Adult Numeracy Network is the professional organization of adult educators, researchers, and professional developers who are dedicated to quality math instruction for adult learners. Our national community gathers every year for a full day of active learning from each other and from our experienced presenters. Join us as we explore research-based mathematics instruction that will enrich our students' mathematical understanding. New to working with adult numeracy and mathematics? Looking for inspiration to refresh your experienced practice? Practitioners at any experience level are welcome to join us. Abstract:
This workshop makes classroom action research practical and accessible. Formative assessment learning techniques combined with the professional development methods of classroom action research and communities of inquiry provide a mechanism for self-sustained continuing professional development at the local level (Creswell, 2012; Kerka, 2003). This workshop emphasizes collaborating and learning with peers about what happens in the classroom to find ways to make learning more effective and efficient. For adult educators, systemic inquiry and intellectual challenge are powerful sources of motivation, growth, and renewal- (Angelo & Cross, 1993, p.10). When students are participants in, as well as are the focus of, an active system of inquiry and intellectual challenge, they also receive the benefits of motivation, growth, and renewal. A preliminary first-year summary of the Adult Learner Leadership in Education Services (ALLIES) evaluation study undertaken by VALUEUSA is attached, as presented at COABE 2015. So far nearly 300 adult learners in six states have participated in this experimental study on the effects of student involvement as leaders in adult education programs. VALUEUSA's two-year study is funded by Dollar General Literacy Foundation in partnership with Research Allies for Lifelong Learning. ATTACHMENTS: ALLIES Preliminary Summary March 2015 Final

Abstract:
These three short, free, authentic professional development videos for teachers or tutors draw on five principles of effective vocabulary instruction from the research of Curtis and McKeown, 1987. See http://www.ncsall.net/?id=466, in an article in Focus on Basics, Connecting Research and Practice, Volume 2, Issue A, The nature of vocabulary acquisition. Hillsdale, NJ: Erlbaum.) The five principles are: 1) Students get numerous opportunities to learn a word's meaning; 2) Words are presented in a variety of contexts; 3) Students are asked to process words in active, generative ways; 4) Distinctions as well as similarities among words' meanings are stressed; and 5) improvement is emphasized in students' ability to use words in speaking and writing, as well as to recognize their meanings. The adult reading teacher introduces the theory, and the lessons, and then we see the lessons in progress. The web address for these videos is http://www.mlo ts.org/?page_id=59

Abstract:
This professional development workshop focused on how to include formative assessment techniques into regular learning activities. Participants experienced formative classroom assessments techniques (CATs) and learned how to integrate these techniques in their practice. Participants created a CAT adapted for their learning event and a plan to administer, document, and share the results as action research. Abstract:
Education and lifelong learning are the keys to opportunity for individuals and communities at large. The enactment of the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA) has reauthorized educational and workforce development policies. In the next couple of years, WIOA will require a shift in the delivery of adult education literacy instruction and workforce development. Libraries are at the cornerstone of this legislative and are among the most accessible institutions both public and academic libraries reach all populations. Thus, the outreach capabilities that libraries bring to the table make them a crucial partner to assist with the implementation of WIOA core principles. This workshop will provide attendees with the tools to create a sustainable partnership with both pubic libraries and community colleges libraries. Through strong partnerships attendees will be able to accelerate learning and distribute skills and knowledge; and can add depth and breadth the community using legislative set forth under WIOA. This pre-conference will be a mix of facilitated discussions followed by hands-on activities using successful examples of libraries and community-based organizations. Participants will have an opportunity to perform a SWOT analysis of their respective programs and a library. The attendees will not be required to have any prior knowledge of creating partnerships. You will gain new skills to utilize at your respective programs. ATTACHMENTS: Adult Literacy and Libraries Community Partnerships Adult Literacy through Libraries Building a National Movement
