    Abstract:

Work ethic—sometimes called soft skills, workplace readiness, or foundational behaviors—are emerging as critical skills for the future. Students with strong non-cognitive skills graduate college at nearly double the average rate. Nearly 9 out of 10 hiring managers nationwide say work ethic is their most important factor in hiring. The challenge is that fewer than 1 in 5 students have these basic skills, and almost all education is focused on academic and cognitive skills. However, new strategies in developing work ethic are making a huge difference with diverse populations across the country. https://prezi.com/htwq_1u0sinj/work-ethic-the-critical-skills-of-the-21st-century-workforce/?utm_campaign=share&token=92988fcec9982549fd62ba241b53ee6eab05b23b21b6e3908d7c4d50182e4fde&utm_medium=copy

    Abstract:

Ashland University offers the longest continuously operating post-secondary correctional education program in the United States.  Established in 1964 at the Ohio State Reformatory, the AU offerings now serve over 1,000 incarcerated students annually with college curriculum.  The programs are offered to both male and female adult offenders in the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC), and male and female juvenile offenders in the Ohio Department of Youth Services (ODYS).  A recent emphasis has been placed on the development and delivery of “online” courses for the correctional programs which do not require live internet access – something prohibited in the correctional environment.

    Abstract:

The Iowa Department of Education presented at the 2019 COABE Conference on their collaboration with Iowa’s 15 community colleges to build, connect, and empower employer-led, community-based sector partnerships to combat a shortage of skilled labor through a wide variety of talent attraction, retention, and development initiatives. The discussion centered on newly developed statewide materials, strategies, and initiatives which continue to support the development and growth of collaborative sector partnerships in Iowa, including a series of educational toolkits, community of practice initiatives, and statewide career pathway development strategies for critical industries like health science, advanced manufacturing, IT, and energy. Many of these resources, strategies, and general ideas can be easily and quickly replicated in other communities across the US.
