    Abstract:

Over the past several years, Literacy New York successfully developed and implemented online tutor training in its statewide network of 34 agencies. Building on this success, LNY expanded the training to include teachers of adults who range in grade level equivalency 3 through 8 to better equip educators to meet WIOA requirements. The training includes training in reading, math, English language learning, and employability soft skills. In this session, participants will learn about why the training was developed, the roll out to the network, its effectiveness, and the fundamentals of the expansion. Participants are encouraged to bring their smartphones, tablets, or computers to log in to the training to see first-hand how it works. Participants will also learn how the training is managed and the how it has helped tutor and teacher recruitment, saved money, and removed logistical problems.

    Abstract:

Building pathways to work and academic success requires a solid foundation, wide paths of basic language skills, and narrower paths branching toward learners’ divergent goals. Making instruction relevant for all learners while launching them in many different work and school directions is challenging. How can we help English language learners develop career and academic readiness skills while they explore diverse work interests, employment sectors, and pathways for achieving their goals? And how can we develop general soft skills for employability through the specific functional contexts of the sixteen career pathways and help students develop digital technology skills during their education journey? The presenter will introduce a new course with paving stones for building this path.

Sense-Making vs Answer-Getting in Our Math Classrooms

    Abstract:

Students are open to making sense in a reading/writing classroom. Most people expect that reading/writing classrooms involve student interpretation and explanation of texts. In math classrooms, though, students often just want us to show us how to do it. They want teachers to do the interpreting and explaining, and we need to give that power back to them. With these materials, we explore how to translate a literacy frame for sense-making into our math classes. We’ll consider: How can we harness students’ background knowledge and observations to build a collective understanding before our first calculation? How do we promote close reading of a mathematical text? How do we engage students who move quickly, while supporting students who need more time? Our workshop is for anyone who believes math should make sense both to ourselves and to our students. All workshop materials can be found at bit.ly/COABE2018CUNY

    Abstract:

Since 2014, the CUNY Adult Literacy/HSE Program has collaborated with the NYS Department of Education to create the NYSED Teacher Leader Initiative. This project has developed a community of teacher leaders across the state, dedicated to improving teaching practice in our field. These teacher leaders bring our training to educators in their regions, and develop resources and projects of their own. This workshop provides an overview and answers questions about the initiative. We'll use the voices of the NYSED Teacher Leaders themselves to reflect on the lessons we've learned about effective, ongoing, and engaging teacher development. This workshop is for teachers, administrators, state education directors - anyone interested in the resources developed and the lessons learned through this initiative. This PDF is a collection of handouts used in the workshop session conducted by Steve Hinds at the 2018 COABE National Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Keep in mind if you download and print this resource that many printers will automatically "shrink to fit" a PDF, reducing the size of the images . This ruins the segments and figures that are meant to be drawn using actual rulers. Make sure to turn off this setting if you print the resource.
