    Abstract:

Pennsylvania is faced with the same challenges as other states across the country; many employers cannot find skilled workers to hire, and numerous job seekers have barriers to getting back into the labor force. This webinar will explore some data about the skills gap that Pennsylvania faces, especially with the challenges of helping to educate and upskill those with barriers to employment (such as low literacy levels or inconsistent work history). It will also outline a couple of solutions that adult educators and workforce development boards can invest in (such as integrated education and training) that will help bridge this skill gap and help our communities grow and will provide best practices that can be used across the nation.

ROUND TABLE HANDOUT: Supporting ABE students’ academic success means advocating for institutional change beyond the borders of ABE programs. Our goal is to generate dialogue about the culture of ABE at our institutions to identify opportunities for student-centered initiatives that open college pathways for ABE students. Combined co-taught ABE and Dev. Ed. courses at TCC have broadened perspectives on student capacity, exposed assumptions and stereotypes, and created opportunities for acceleration.

According to the COABE Media Outreach Toolkit, one of the best ways for the adult education community to inform policy makers, funders, and the public of the work they’re doing is to share the success stories of their students, staff, and education programs. In this presentation, we will take a look at how education centers can expand their outreach efforts by taking advantage of some of the free resources offered by education vendors, including the creation and promotion of success stories.

    Abstract:

Since 2014, the CUNY Adult Literacy/HSE Program has collaborated with the NYS Department of Education to create the NYSED Teacher Leader Initiative. This project has developed a community of teacher leaders across the state, dedicated to improving teaching practice in our field. These teacher leaders bring our training to educators in their regions, and develop resources and projects of their own. This workshop provides an overview and answers questions about the initiative. We'll use the voices of the NYSED Teacher Leaders themselves to reflect on the lessons we've learned about effective, ongoing, and engaging teacher development. This workshop is for teachers, administrators, state education directors - anyone interested in the resources developed and the lessons learned through this initiative.
