    Abstract:

In keeping with the theme of the 2018 COABE conference, the Adult Numeracy Network wants to remind you that when flying at these new higher altitudes of math standards and assessment, we need to put on our own “math” before assisting our students. Regardless of the level of math that you teach, having increased content knowledge will equip you to better explain concepts to students and give you more avenues to connect with their background knowledge as you listen to students explain their reasoning. This one-hour webinar will highlight one hands-on and collaborative activity to deepen our own math content knowledge in various areas and at various levels (so you will benefit regardless of the math you know or teach). Plus, since our own learning is ongoing, just like that of our students, you will also leave with specific resources and strategies for continued mathematical learning after the webinar. Session Objectives 1. Participants will deepen their understanding of one or more mathematics content area(s) of the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS). 2. Participants will develop their understanding of how their level of mathematics content knowledge contributes to the learning experience of their students. 3. Participants will increase their awareness of their own strengths and/or gaps in mathematics content knowledge. 4. Participants will gain specific strategies and resources for continued learning after the conference. 5. Participants will learn about the value of a low-floor and high-ceiling activity.

    Abstract:

This webinar will explore the numerous ways career pathways can be designed and implemented to comply with WIOA regulations. From bridge programs to Integrated Education and Training (IET), the components that contribute to successful programs will be discussed, including understanding employer measures and using Labor Market Information (LMI) to build —or enhance—your career pathways program. Learn how to incorporate strategies for adult career pathways into your instructional program using contextualized curriculum. This webinar will define specific lessons, strategies, and activities that can be implemented in your classrooms to give your students the career counseling they missed when they left school. You are their career counselor. WIOA expanded the purpose of Title II to include assisting adults to transition to postsecondary education and training leading to employment. Adult educators are tasked to develop and deliver adult career pathways systems that will successfully transition low-skilled adults to postsecondary education and employment. Our classrooms are now a place where students learn not only the academics for credential success but also the workforce skills for career success.

    Abstract:

If you have ever worked with an I-BEST (Integrated Basic Education Skills Training) program, you will know that I-BEST students fast track through both GED® testing and skills training through this nationally recognized instructional model. I-BEST students are quicker than their traditionally enrolled contemporaries to improve their basic skills in reading, writing, and math, complete their GED exam, and arrive at a career entry point. The downside to I-BEST is that it’s expensive. Heather has taught 4 I-BEST programs and has come to realize that there are ways to replicate components of I-BEST at very low or no additional cost to your program. This webinar will look at how, by making a few simple changes, we can help our traditionally enrolled students also get the best that our programs can offer.
