Looking for a way to get out of “Worksheet Land?” Do your students need to practice writing and speaking about math? Are you looking for a simple way to up your math instruction game? Join me to discuss top standards-aligned math resources to integrate into any classroom to foster communication, math, and problem-solving skills. This webinar will provide an exploration of free resources, but also model ways to use them in the classroom. Abstract:
Research suggests that a major stumbling block to understanding algebra, for students at all levels, stems from not developing an understanding of the equal sign. In this webinar, participants will learn how students at all levels; ABE, ESOL, and HSE alike; can construct meaning in algebraic equations by examining relationships on opposite sides of the equal sign. Participants will understand how to use simple instructional routines, visual models, and online resources to help students develop conceptual understanding of equality and add depth to the process of “what you do to one side of the equal sign you have to do to the other side.” No prior expertise in algebra is needed. Abstract:
As of April 2020, estimates of the literacy and numeracy skills of U.S. adults using data from the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) are available for all states and counties. This webinar will demonstrate a new, and interactive user-friendly tool (called the U.S. PIAAC Skills Map) that shows these estimates. The Skills Map allows users to compare the estimates of any county to those of its state or compare the estimates of any state to the national estimates. It also allows users to compare the estimates for any two counties or for any two states. Examples on how you can effectively use this tool for funding and policy decisions on targeting the population most in-need will be provided. This session will help address some of the common challenges that teachers may encounter during the initial stages of implementation of TABE® 11 & 12 such as where to start, what materials to use, and how to help students succeed in this more rigorous test. This session will focus on teaching strategies and resources that align with the technology-enhanced items and format of the test. In addition, teachers will also explore how to allow students to take full advantage of all the available technology tools on the test. Lastly, teachers will walk away with a wealth of online teaching tools and resources aligned to the TABE® 11 & 12 Assessment Blueprints. You must be logged in to download this resource. Abstract:
Did you know that there are mathematicians that spend their entire life trying to solve one math problem? These are highly educated men and women who see mathematics as creative and open. They are not confined by rules – they MAKE their own rules! But isn’t it unfortunate that in the adult education classrooms mathematics is thought to be a subject of rules and procedures? That it isn’t something that is creative. This webinar will explore the powerful idea of mathematical freedom and change mathematics for learners so that mathematics becomes about learning instead of performing. Participants should expect to be engaged in thinking about problems in an open and creative manner, to begin to see the world deeper, but not necessarily faster.

This presentation is aimed at adult learning educators and administrators interested in exploring open educational resources (OER) for the adult classroom. For those new to OER, we will introduce and explain the benefits of their use in adult education, and provide resource recommendations and advice for how to get started. For the experienced OER user, we will discuss insights from our research and efforts curating and testing OER resources. The insights are drawn from the experiences of educators who hail from 21 states and a variety of classroom types—including community colleges, community centers, correctional facilities, and local education agencies.

Abstract:
The provided materials were used for a workshop at the 2018 COABE Conference. This session provided participants with hands-on activities to explore the most common solid figures used on the HSE in an effort to discover how they might develop their own formulas for these shapes. By investigating the relationships and properties of these shapes, participants improved understanding of the meaning behind the formulas provided on the HSE tests. They also evaluated a workplace scenario in marketing to see how the SA and V of solid figures can influence how products are designed.

Abstract:
How do we bridge the gap between students’ current understanding of arithmetic to the higher level mathematics content that they need to learn? Brain science reveals that students at all levels, ELL, ABE, & HSE alike, can cross this bridge by tapping into the visual processing centers of the brain. In this presentation, teachers will explore how a visual model can be used to help students to gain understanding of the meaning and uses of variables, recognition of patterns and functions, and make connections to the language of algebra. Teachers will be able to connect their own learning with teaching in a multi-level classroom. The presentation includes links to additional materials including classroom-ready printable resources
