    Abstract:

Did you know that there are mathematicians that spend their entire life trying to solve one math problem? These are highly educated men and women who see mathematics as creative and open. They are not confined by rules – they MAKE their own rules! But isn’t it unfortunate that in the adult education classrooms mathematics is thought to be a subject of rules and procedures? That it isn’t something that is creative. This webinar will explore the powerful idea of mathematical freedom and change mathematics for learners so that mathematics becomes about learning instead of performing. Participants should expect to be engaged in thinking about problems in an open and creative manner, to begin to see the world deeper, but not necessarily faster.

    Abstract:

The Iowa Department of Education presented at the 2019 COABE Conference on their collaboration with Iowa’s 15 community colleges to build, connect, and empower employer-led, community-based sector partnerships to combat a shortage of skilled labor through a wide variety of talent attraction, retention, and development initiatives. The discussion centered on newly developed statewide materials, strategies, and initiatives which continue to support the development and growth of collaborative sector partnerships in Iowa, including a series of educational toolkits, community of practice initiatives, and statewide career pathway development strategies for critical industries like health science, advanced manufacturing, IT, and energy. Many of these resources, strategies, and general ideas can be easily and quickly replicated in other communities across the US. Abstract:

This webinar will explore the numerous ways career pathways can be designed and implemented to comply with WIOA regulations. From bridge programs to Integrated Education and Training (IET), the components that contribute to successful programs will be discussed, including understanding employer measures and using Labor Market Information (LMI) to build —or enhance—your career pathways program. Learn how to incorporate strategies for adult career pathways into your instructional program using contextualized curriculum. This webinar will define specific lessons, strategies, and activities that can be implemented in your classrooms to give your students the career counseling they missed when they left school. You are their career counselor. WIOA expanded the purpose of Title II to include assisting adults to transition to postsecondary education and training leading to employment. Adult educators are tasked to develop and deliver adult career pathways systems that will successfully transition low-skilled adults to postsecondary education and employment. Our classrooms are now a place where students learn not only the academics for credential success but also the workforce skills for career success.
