Abstract:

The Transition Program at Hawkeye Community College's Metro Center is bigger and better than ever. This interactive session will illustrate how Adult Education's collaboration and partnerships with other agencies and programs proves essential to every student's successful transition to post secondary, especially in light of WIOA. Hawkeye's Transition Program builds internal partnerships with the English Language Learning (ELL) program, including instructors of Hawkeye's ELL hybrid college preparatory courses. Transition services play a key role in the High School Completion (HSC) program's Welcome Week, Hawkeye's new intake program for HSC students which uses components of Dr. Laura Weisel's PowerPath system. The Transition Program is also an instrumental part of Hawkeye's I-BEST program, and Hawkeye's full-time Transition Specialist works from the Admissions' Office on main campus weekly to continue paving students' path to college credit courses. A close partnership with Iowa Workforce Development ensures that students have access to the Youth Program, various employment opportunities, and multiple funding steams for their education. Participants will experience how Hawkeye's Transition Program has built the program's philosophy of collaboration, which includes components from Dr. Carol Dweck's research on mindset and from Powerpath's participatory learning techniques. Abstract:

A short, free, authentic professional development video for teachers in which an adult educator uses a writing process that involves writing quickly in a journal, without thinking, so students' ideas come out fast. She gives a topic, Last Week's Experiences. She stresses as a purpose writing to learn something, to find their thoughts on issues, on themselves and others. She asks the students to pick one of these experiences and focus on it, to list a group of words that come to mind as they think about that experience or event. Students individually brainstorm, by themselves, without thinking about the ideas, without being critical, to free their minds to generate ideas. Then she asks them to write a short paragraph about the Event. She asks for a topic sentence and at least three sentences. Abstract:

Illinois enhances transitioning with a focus on integrating career and technical education with adult education. Learn about the Illinois Transitions Academy as we scale-up and sustain the Accelerating Opportunity initiative through ICAPS (Integrated Career and Academic Preparation System). Abstract:

This workshop makes classroom action research practical and accessible. Formative assessment learning techniques combined with the professional development methods of classroom action research and communities of inquiry provide a mechanism for self-sustained continuing professional development at the local level (Creswell, 2012; Kerka, 2003).  This workshop emphasizes collaborating and learning with peers about what happens  in the classroom to find ways to make learning more effective and efficient. For adult educators, systemic inquiry and intellectual challenge are powerful sources of motivation, growth, and renewal- (Angelo & Cross, 1993, p.10). When students are participants in, as well as are the focus of, an active system of inquiry and intellectual challenge, they also receive the benefits of motivation, growth, and renewal. Abstract:

A short, free, authentic math professional development video for teachers, this GED preparation class is organized in  co-operating teams that compete in a Jeopardy game. They are given numeracy problems to solve and teams are awarded points. This is a practice and reinforcement lesson, not a content introduction lesson.
