Abstract:
This spotlight describes actions and strategies that career navigators and advisors can take in helping English learners and immigrants participating in IELCE and IET activities.
Career navigators and advisors support adult learners by providing a consistent point of contact throughout their education program and identifying services and resources to support learners on their career pathway. This support can be crucial to English learners and immigrants learning to navigate complex U.S. systems. This spotlight offers recommendations and resources for career navigators and program staff serving ELs and adult immigrant learners.
Benefits and Uses
This spotlight offers strategies for career navigators to apply to the services they provide to English learners and immigrants. Career navigators will benefit from learning about different strategies and considerations they can bring to their work with these learners. Learners will benefit from the support of career navigators who are better prepared to help those learners take advantage of available services, supports, and opportunities. Strong navigation services also help English and immigrant learners who are better supported and prepare for and succeed in their next steps, be it continued education, workforce training, or careers.
In this spotlight, career navigators will learn from strategies and examples from Austin Community College’s Career Pathways Coordinator, the partnership of adult education providers in Chicago that provides a career navigator position at their local OneStop, and others. The spotlight culminates with a selection of resources, research, and training opportunities that career navigators can explore for more information.
