Abstract:
Using the CCRS's multiple references to the number line, this numeracy session uses the number line as the focus of "Coherence" from the beginning, definition of number sets through Algebraic thinking. We investigate the age-old question, "Why is a negative times a negative a positive?" We explore basic operations (add, subtract, multiply and divide) and continue on to solve simple algebraic equations. You must be logged in to download this resource. Why Before How by Jana Hazekamp focuses on developing and emphasizing algebraic reasoning and critical thinking skills over finding the answer to a math problem. This session, based on Hazekamp's book, will look at specific strategies and methods of instruction designed to develop critical numeracy skills in every learner—and lay a solid foundation on which to build future mathematics.Building on Number Bonding Building on Vertical Addition NRS 1-4 Math Overviews Number Bonding Template Simon Says -- Use with Algebra Tiles Ten and 100 Grid Frames Translate into Mathematical Expressions Why Before How -- ABE Math
