    Abstract:

Most instructors will not study the pages and pages of standards available to effectively plan a lesson in a specific content area, yet they will use the amazing amounts of detail to guide the activities in the classroom. The mathematics standards provide an essential tool for guiding teachers toward instructional models to help students learn mathematics in ways that transform conceptual understanding, procedural skills, and applications so they become lifelong learners. Participants of this session will have the opportunity to analyze some standards line by line, paralleling the selection process considered by the Arizona Math Content Team in revising the state standards. Through the process, decisions need to be made whether a standard is useful, relevant, and worded correctly. As you work in small groups, you will understand the process of assessing current state standards and be prepared if asked to revise your own.

The workshop will provide activities and texts adaptable and suitable for a variety of reading levels. It will model and encourage Freirian methods of instruction that stress student-led activities that increase critical thinking and contextualized learning. It will review and utilize adult learning principles.

Mentors are assigned new instructors (mentees) and engage with the new instructor throughout the instructional year.

    Abstract:

Math for the Multilevel Classroom:   A Focus on Unit Measurement COABE Conference 2016 session A close look at the College and Career Readiness Mathematics Standards for adult education will uncover concepts, procedures, and applications that span all levels (A - E). How can an understanding of unit measurement help a higher-level math student? What does it have to do with algebra? In this session we'll explore unit measurement by working through a lesson that incorporates key concepts and procedures that are essential for beginning through high school equivalency level learners. We'll work with vocabulary, discussion questions, hands-on activities, and differentiated activities that you'll be able to take home and try in your own context. Abstract:

What does a lesson built for student learning look like when learners come to programs with limited or interrupted formal education?  Students who lack home language literacy and exposure to a formal classroom setting need explicit training about "classroom culture."  Instructors need to use systematic scaffolding and other research-based techniques to effectively equip learners with transferrable skills for tomorrow's workforce and civic engagement.
