Abstract:
To achieve lasting social change, we need a movement that is driven by powerful, resilient, creative, and impactful individuals who stay in this work for the long-haul. At Move to End Violence, we believe that to show up this way -- as our most impactful and innovative selves -- we need to intentionally practice self-care. We created the 21-Day Challenge to help build a powerful community of movement activists engaged in this practice together.

A Different Approach to Math Manipulatives is a workshop designed to support ABE and GED teachers by providing them with strategies and instructional resources in their implementation the Mathematics College and Career Readiness Standards. Participants will find the strategies presented in this workshop easily adaptable and suitable to students of varying learning styles and ability. Resources will help in developing lessons that apply the standards of mathematical practices in CCRS, focusing on the most difficult to teach concepts such as rational numbers, algebraic equations, proportions, statistics and functions. Workshop participants will receive a complete packet of resources which includes a workshop binder and a manipulatives starter kit that will enable participants to start applying the strategies immediately upon their return to their classroom/school.

"Hard skills" are important to getting a job. "Soft skills" are important for keeping a job. We can help our students qualify for and retain jobs with family sustaining incomes if we help them improve their soft, work readiness skills. The primary focus of this session is to explore a wealth of resources, strategies, and activities for infusing soft skills into your ABE, ESL, GED®, and AHS classrooms. Many of these resources have been developed by your colleagues in other states.
