Abstract:
This session will help address some of the common challenges that teachers may encounter during the initial stages of implementation of TABE® 11 & 12 such as where to start, what materials to use, and how to help students succeed in this more rigorous test. This session will focus on teaching strategies and resources that align with the technology-enhanced items and format of the test. In addition, teachers will also explore how to allow students to take full advantage of all the available technology tools on the test. Lastly, teachers will walk away with a wealth of online teaching tools and resources aligned to the TABE® 11 & 12 Assessment Blueprints.

Abstract:
Did you know that there are mathematicians that spend their entire life trying to solve one math problem? These are highly educated men and women who see mathematics as creative and open. They are not confined by rules – they MAKE their own rules! But isn’t it unfortunate that in the adult education classrooms mathematics is thought to be a subject of rules and procedures? That it isn’t something that is creative. This webinar will explore the powerful idea of mathematical freedom and change mathematics for learners so that mathematics becomes about learning instead of performing. Participants should expect to be engaged in thinking about problems in an open and creative manner, to begin to see the world deeper, but not necessarily faster.

Abstract:
This extensive lesson plan is accompanied by a course outline for an additional 11 units. The unit explores introductory-level jobs that can lead to future advancement. The starting position presented in the first lesson plan is Customer Service Clerk at a Supermarket. The job description is presented and reviewed by Learners, accompanying vocabulary assists in their understanding of the job and the expectations for the worker. Practice dialogues, role plays, application and interview exercises are also suggested as additional activities. Twenty-six (26) "cue" statements are provided to assist the Learner in understanding the new vocabulary along with a Customer Service Job Description from Hannaford Supermarkets who assisted the author in researching this lesson plan. An astounding 85% of job success comes from well-developed soft and people skills, and only 15% of job success comes from technical skills and knowledge (hard skills). Join Dr. Susan McKee, educational psychologist, to learn simple but effective strategies for soft skills instruction and assessment. Effective soft skills instruction in basic education programs requires adaptable resources, consistent evaluation, and individualized feedback and planning. This workshop will explore simple but effective steps for teaching soft skills concepts in any basic education course. In addition, it will address strategies for soft skills evaluation and for supporting students’ long-term soft skills development. Attendees will also review a sample lesson from Pace’s Life Skills 25 curriculum.
