    Abstract:

Data from the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) shows that adults in the 86 haYe significantly loZer digital skills than adults in other developed nations and implies that library patrons may struggle to use digital library resources. Multnomah County Library and Portland State University are collaborating on a project to assess community members' digital skills using a valid and reliable test created by the Organization for Economic and Cooperative Development (OECD) known as Education and Skills Online (ESO). This session will explore assessment results. Presenters will discuss the ways the team has adapted the ESO assessment tool to suit the needs of the library and the community and what the team has learned so far about how the PSTRE framework relates to library tasks that a typical adult learner may perform to access education and employment opportunities. Abstract:

Students from other countries learn different procedures for math operations and can become confused when trying to understand the standard algorithms taught in the U.S. But through the use of "number talk" instruction, ELLs explain their procedure for solving a problem. The instructor prompts the student and records and illustrates the student's thinking to develop all students' abilities in procedural fluency, conceptual understanding, and adaptive reasoning. This workshop presents ideas for using number talks and gives opportunities to try them out. ATTACHMENTS: Integrating Diverse Learners Math

We all know about the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), but what other federal programs might you be able to access? In this session, learn about opportunities to serve people with basic skills needs using support from the U.S. Departments of Transportation, Agriculture, Housing and Urban Development, and more. Go home with ideas for how new partnerships can help you tap into new sources of funding. Participants with all levels of math knowledge are invited to attend as no level of expertise is required by the participants.   Participants will travel to 8 stations to learn a math practice and try out an activity that shows the practice in action. Each station will demonstrate an activity that can easily be translated into skills needed for any of the High School Equivalency Exams and College and Career Readiness. All activities will be differentiated as well so attendees of all levels will be able to participate.   Activities to be covered include differentiated war, algebra tiles, Cuisenaire rods, pattern blocks, exploring triangles, fractions strips, problem solving, and attribute cards. Abstract:

For too long, algebra has been viewed in adult education as the second most daunting math (second only to fractions), and now it is time to make algebra as approachable as adding. Participants in this session will discover some new approaches to teaching algebra as patterns, rules, equations, and lines on a graph while utilizing research-based tools, techniques, and resources learned from the Adult Numeracy Instruction -“ Professional Development (ANI-PD). Hands-on practice and ready-to-use resources will be provided. Abstract:

These three short, free, authentic professional development videos for teachers or tutors draw on five principles of effective vocabulary instruction from the research of Curtis and McKeown, 1987. See  http://www.ncsall.net/?id=466,  in an article in Focus on Basics, Connecting Research and Practice, Volume 2, Issue A, The nature of vocabulary acquisition. Hillsdale, NJ: Erlbaum.) The five principles are: 1) Students get numerous opportunities to learn a word's meaning; 2) Words are presented in a variety of contexts; 3) Students are asked to process words in active, generative ways; 4) Distinctions as well as similarities among words' meanings are stressed; and 5) improvement is emphasized in students' ability to use words in speaking and writing, as well as to recognize their meanings. The adult reading teacher introduces the theory, and the lessons, and then we see the lessons in progress. The web address for these videos is http://www.mlo ts.org/?page_id=59
