Many adult educators are familiar with the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). But did you know there are numerous other federal and state policies that invest in adult education? This lively session will showcase creative examples of how advocates around the country are drawing on resources such as Community Development Block Grants and Institutes of Museum and Library Sciences grants to support adult education programs and services. Learn about more than a half-dozen different federal investments that can support adult education in any state. This workshop will guide instructors on how to contextualize social studies content (particularly civics & government) found on the Social Studies GED® test and connect that content with critical reading skills. It will begin with a model lesson using the essential question found in the title of the workshop: Who are “We the People?" The workshop will provide activities and texts adaptable and suitable for a variety of reading levels. It will model and encourage Freirian methods of instruction that stress student-led activities that increase critical thinking and contextualized learning. It will review and utilize adult learning principles.

The Milwaukee Area Technical College ABE Contextualized Career Pathway program is an Integrated Education & Training (IET) Program that currently enrolls GED® prep participants in an approved Career Pathway Credit Certificate program where students earn transferable college credits, while currently enrolled in their GED® program. The program is designed as a co-requisite model where ABE courses support student learning in the college level credit courses. This program has implemented the U. S. Department of Education "Ability to Benefit" for GED students to receive federal financial aid to cover tuition cost.

Many adults who leave high school before graduation go on to lead productive lives through grit and gumption. Some opt to return to our community college to complete their diploma. In addition to the GED® credential, our school offers a competency-based high school diploma program called High School 21+ (HS21+). The HS21+ option allows students to re-enter school with a proficiency focus that incorporates high school credits already earned, documented work and life experience related to high school academics, and technological, literacy, and cognitive skills demonstrations within the classroom. We provide an emergent learning space for achievement and completion that maximizes prior learning success. This session demonstrates competency-based college and career readiness that, through effective interaction and technology-intensive rigor, scaffolds high school completion with workplace and college readiness.
