This compendium describes five innovative practices in bridge and integrated education and training (IET) programs as selected by the Advancing Innovation in Adult Education project.
This compendium describes five innovative practices selected by the Advancing Innovation in Adult Education project. The adult practices highlighted illustrate innovative and enhanced approaches for providing bridge and integrated education and training (IET) programs that assist adult learners in developing the skills, abilities, and knowledge they need to enroll in postsecondary education or occupational training, earn short-term credentials, and obtain employment.
Benefits and Uses
This compendium provides information about two types of practices: bridge programs and integrated education and training (IET) programs. Adult education bridge programs prepare adults to enroll in postsecondary education and training through occupationally contextualized literacy and numeracy instruction and career and college success activities. IET programs enable adult learners to develop their foundational skills and workforce preparation skills through occupational training that leads to educational and career advancement.
A variety of stakeholders will find this information useful, including AE state staff; AE program administrators, instructors, and staff; workforce development staff; federal agency staff; and AE researchers.
This compendium describes the project’s criteria for the selection of innovative practices, and provides context for the practices that were selected and profiles each of the innovative practices.

These videos can be used to recruit teachers for IET and for messaging around the benefits of collaborative/team teaching for instructors and learners.
The Illinois Integrated Career & Academic Preparation System (ICAPS) is committed to the implementation of effective Integrated Education and Training (IET) Programs. To meet this need, ICAPS has developed a series of teacher videos to effectively implement IET programming. These videos can be used to recruit teachers for IET and for messaging around the benefits of collaborative/team teaching for instructors and learners.

This spotlight describes actions and strategies that career navigators and advisors can take in helping English learners and immigrants participating in IELCE and IET activities.
Career navigators and advisors support adult learners by providing a consistent point of contact throughout their education program and identifying services and resources to support learners on their career pathway. This support can be crucial to English learners and immigrants learning to navigate complex U.S. systems. This spotlight offers recommendations and resources for career navigators and program staff serving ELs and adult immigrant learners.
Benefits and Uses
This spotlight offers strategies for career navigators to apply to the services they provide to English learners and immigrants. Career navigators will benefit from learning about different strategies and considerations they can bring to their work with these learners. Learners will benefit from the support of career navigators who are better prepared to help those learners take advantage of available services, supports, and opportunities. Strong navigation services also help English and immigrant learners who are better supported and prepare for and succeed in their next steps, be it continued education, workforce training, or careers.
In this spotlight, career navigators will learn from strategies and examples from Austin Community College’s Career Pathways Coordinator, the partnership of adult education providers in Chicago that provides a career navigator position at their local OneStop, and others. The spotlight culminates with a selection of resources, research, and training opportunities that career navigators can explore for more information.

Abstract:
The Nursing Assistant textbook prepares students for employment as nursing assistants as well as for entry to other health-related programs. The book covers ten chapters, virtual simulations, and checklists to prepare participants to take the Wisconsin Nurse Aide Competency Exam. The book can be viewed online or downloaded in a variety of formats, including PDF and ePub.
Developed by the Wisconsin Technical College System’s Nursing Assistant program, this is an excellent open-source textbook for certified nursing assistant or nursing assistant instruction. As it was designed for the Wisconsin Nurse Aide Competency Exam, it may need to be adapted to each state’s required exam. The online version includes interactive glossary terms that allow learners to examine and reinforce key terminology as they read, and it also contains video content, links to supplementary sources, and interactive knowledge checks. Sample skills checklists are also provided throughout the book.

The Minnesota Adult Education Professional Development YouTube Channel on IET Programs is a free online playlist of videos that can be used to explore multiple facets of IET instruction.
The playlist includes videos on designing IET programs, developing workplace preparation activities, strategies for developing single set of learning objectives (SSLO), and much more. There are 13 informational videos within the playlist, all specific to IET programming. This IET Programs playlist includes webinars and PD sessions focused on the basic components of IETs, strategies for using the IET Design Toolkit, and SSLO support. The videos can be watched in their entirety, or viewers can advance to the desired chapter within each video specific to their learning goals.

Abstract:
This guide summarizes considerations, tools, and examples that can be used by state and facility administrators and instructors as they develop and implement IET programs in jails and prisons.
When aligned with career pathways and other education and training programs in the community, IET programs offered in prisons and jails enable participants to make significant progress toward their education and training goals that can be continued after release. This guide summarizes lessons learned from the IET in Corrections project and serves as a companion to the IET Design Toolkit. It offers considerations, tools, and examples for planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating IET programs in prisons and jails, designed to supplement the guidance provided in the Toolkit.
Benefits and Uses
IET programs continue to gain momentum in adult education as a strategy for combining adult education and literacy, workforce training, and workforce preparation to offer contextualized instruction for learners. Since 2020, OCTAE has supported the development and implementation of IET programs in prisons and jails to help address the foundational and occupational skill needs of adults impacted by incarceration. IET offers important benefits to correctional education participants, such as accelerated learning, access to career pathways, and contextualized instruction. This guide summarizes lessons learned from early experiences developing IET programs for correctional education settings and can help correctional education staff to apply IET guidance to their specific context.
The guide also is being used to support OCTAE’s recent project designed to provide technical assistance (TA) to 36 states as they develop and implement IET programs in corrections. Participating states – and others – can potentially use the guide to complement information offered in the IET Design Toolkit as they develop, plan, implement, and evaluate IET programs in corrections.
Useful features of the guide include: considerations for developing and implementing IET programs in corrections related to each phase of IET design; examples from pilot states’ experiences developing IET programs in corrections; and tools for developing state policy guidance, making the case for IET in corrections, and understanding partner and staff roles in each phase of IET design and implementation.
Required Training
Prior training is not recommended for this resource, but it is encouraged to be used in conjunction with the IET Design Toolkit.

This Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center (VALRC) resource is a comprehensive to-do checklist for IET design brainstorming that functions as a recommended IET resource bibliography, especially referencing the IET Design Toolkit. It is laid out clearly in chart form with associated links for a robust set of standards around the initial stages of IET development, including Self-Assessment, Program Planning and Design, Learner Experience, Instruction, and Technical Assistance and Professional Learning Community (Parts I–V). The checklist functions as a useful guide to the critical steps involved with IET program design and as a one-stop curated list of relevant resources.

Abstract:
IELCE activities funded by WIOA Section 243 funds must be delivered in combination with IET programs. Using bridge strategies to connect IELCE to IET is one approach to delivering IELCE activities in combination with IET programs. This spotlight how states, regions, and programs are using bridge strategies to prepare learners enrolled in IELCE activities for IET programs.
Benefits and Uses
Recognizing that states and programs must deliver Section 243-funded IELCE activities in combination with IET, this spotlight aims to provide substantive examples of one approach: the use of bridge strategies. This spotlight describes the benefits of using bridge strategies to connect IELCE to IET. It also provides an example framework for how IELCE can serve a bridge by preparing learners for an IET and other steps along a career pathway.
The spotlight showcases examples of this approach in action at the state, regional, and program level. State staff and program administrators will benefit from the experience shared by Washington State, Women Employed, and Prince George’s Community College. States and programs can also explore considerations for using bridge strategies to connect IELCE to IET.
