Out-of-school youth who are not engaged in school or employment are more likely to engage in destructive behaviors and less likely to be able to support themselves financially. Preparing out-of-school youth for a successful transition to the workforce is essential to ensuring a successful transition to employment and financial stability. Developing a work readiness program for this population can help to ensure workplace success. This webinar discussion will share strategies for infusing work skills into programs for out-of-school youth. Through an interactive webinar discussion, participants will learn about challenges and strategies as well as discuss cultural and economic barriers and implications.

Since 2014, the CUNY Adult Literacy/HSE Program has collaborated with the NYS Department of Education to create the NYSED Teacher Leader Initiative. This project has developed a community of teacher leaders across the state, dedicated to improving teaching practice in our field. These teacher leaders bring our training to educators in their regions, and develop resources and projects of their own. This workshop provides an overview and answers questions about the initiative. We'll use the voices of the NYSED Teacher Leaders themselves to reflect on the lessons we've learned about effective, ongoing, and engaging teacher development. This workshop is for teachers, administrators, state education directors - anyone interested in the resources developed and the lessons learned through this initiative. This session showcases the resources CASAS offers - many at no cost - which help agencies implement quality ABE/ESL programs with standardized accountability measures. The CASAS framework assists programs to assess, instruct and track youth and adult student's progress from beginning literacy through transition to post-secondary and the workforce.

Abstract:
Computer-assisted Instruction for Work-related Basic Reading and Numeracy includes two short, free, basic reading and numeracy professional development videos for teachers. Students preparing to be nursing assistants are shown in a computer lab using KeyTrain computer-assisted instruction software in an authentic class providing basic reading and numeracy. Interviews provide background on Notre Dame Education Center (NDEC) in Lawrence, Massachusetts, its computer-assisted instruction program, and its related job skills training, work readiness and support services. Computer-assisted instruction coaches discuss the program and how students use the instructional software; and two students discuss how they use computer-assisted instruction at the program and at home.
